Getting to Tulum has never been easier with the opening of the new airport, TQO or Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. You can also get there nonstop flying JetBlue from Tampa to Cancun. The drive from Cancun to Tulum is a little over an hour.
Party the Beach Clubs
Most resorts in Tulum will have a beach club attached. A “beach club” is basically a restaurant on the beach with a DJ. Most of them charge an entrance fee or require a minimum spend, which can range from $50-100 but it’s all used towards your food and drinks. Some of our favorites were Vagalume Beach Club and Bagatelle Tulum.
Tulum Mayan Ruins
While this isn’t my personal preference in activities and we didn’t go, I have to add it to the list because it’s unique to the area and beautiful to see! This is the only ancient seaside city in Mexico, perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the coast.
Cenotes
All over the Yucatan Peninsula area and you can rent ATVs or bikes or join a tour to get to the closest one to Tulum, Gran Cenote. Gran Cenote is about 15 minutes away from downtown Tulum. This cenote consists of two limestone underwater caves that open up to the jungle!
If you do this adventure without a tour guide, be sure to bring a snorkel to see the colorful fish, turtles, and crabs swimming through the clear waters.
Also note: the entry fee is $15, and you are required to shower off before entering the water. Leave as much as you can at your hotel and do not wear sunscreen!
Rent a Boat
The most relaxing and carefree part of our trip! We rented a boat with a crew for a day with food and drinks included, plus snorkeling! The ceviche was maybe the best I’ve ever had! We had a similar experience in Turks & Caicos, so renting a boat for lunch with a crew is an absolute MUST every tropical getaway!
Ahau Tulum Sculpture Park
The Ven a La Luz is the most well-known sculpture in Tulum and it’s located inside a small outdoor sculpture yard. You can access the yard for a $10 fee. Taking a picture in front of the Ahau Tulum sculpture is a right of passage with the Tulum crowd! Get the picture and check that box!
Dining Out
Dinner was always an experience! Loud music, dancers, fire shows, you name it. There was not ever a dull night in Tulum. Some of the spots we went to were Ilios Tulum (fantastic fire show!), Hartwood (a quiet spot), Philosophy at Casa Malca, Posada Marghertia, and Azulik (I suggest to only go for drinks),
If you’re looking for authentic Mexican tacos on the cheap, Taqueria Honorio is your spot!
