Plus a cute printable summer bucket list!
Summer is so close you can basically smell the sunscreen and taste the nightly ice cream fix. Moms know that summer doesn’t just magically happen though! So, in the spirit of making the most of the chaos, here are five tips to help you plan a summer that’s fun, manageable, and maybe even a little restful.
1. Lock in the Big Stuff Early
Let’s be honest, if you haven’t booked that one summer camp the kids love, the beach house for beach week, or camping spot yet, do it…like yesterday. Summer calendars fill up so fast, and nothing’s worse than realizing your “spontaneous mountain getaway” requires reservations made in January. Even if you’re more staycation-minded, penciling in a few solid activities now makes everything smoother later.
3. Keep a Loose Routine
Personally I have never been a strict schedule kind of mom, but I do know a few! Even if you work from home, you don’t need a strict schedule (it is summer, after all), but yes, some structure helps. Having a couple anchor points in the day like “an hour outside before lunch” or “quiet time after 3pm” keeps everyone from going full WWE Smackdown mode by day three.
4. Mini-Adventures Are the MVP
Not every memory has to come from a big vacation. Some of the best moments come from random little trips and our yearly “Summer Bucketlist”. A drive to that weird diner two towns over you always pass going to soccer games, an after lunch adventure to get slushies, or pitching a tent in your backyard just because. Low effort, low cost, high payoff.
5. Don’t Forget You
Yes, it’s about family time and soaking in the days of summer you have together, but don’t forget to carve out space for you. That could be a quiet coffee on the porch before the house wakes up, hiring a sitter while you go to the spa, or just sitting in your car for 10 extra minutes with the AC blasting and your favorite podcast playing. Recharging isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.
